Almería is a major city and municipality located in the Andalusia region of Spain. It sits in the southeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula along the coastline. The city stretches between the eastern edges of the Sierra de Gádor mountains and the Andarax riverbed. It overlooks the Gulf of Almería, which is a large inlet of the Mediterranean Sea.

Today, the municipality is home to a population of 201,946 people. It serves as the capital of the province of the same name.

The city's history began with the settlement of Pechina to the north. Almería originally developed as a humble trading port for Pechina. It was known by the Arabic name Madīnat al-Mariyya, which means "city of the watchtower." In 933, the city became the base for the Caliphal navy under the rule of Abd-ar-Rahman III. The Caliph later decided to erect city walls in 955 following a naval attack. This period marked the beginning of Almería as a significant urban center.

During the 11th and 12th centuries, Almería reached a period of immense splendor. It became the third-largest city in Al-Andalus. The economy was driven by a massive silk industry. This industry used hundreds of looms and relied on local mulberry trees. The port was a global trade hub for many goods. It exported copper to Fez and Tlemcen. It also exported high-quality textiles. The city imported wool and indigo dye from the Maghreb. It also received linen from Egypt.

This era of wealth ended due to military conflict. In 1147, a Christian coalition led by Alfonso VII captured the city. This event occurred during the Second Crusade. After this conquest, control of the city changed hands many times throughout the Middle Ages. The city passed to Almohad rulers in 1157. Later, it became part of the Emirate of Granada. During the 16th century, the city faced many natural and human disasters. These included four major earthquakes and frequent attacks from Barbary pirates.

Almería has a very unique and extreme climate. It is the driest city in all of Europe. It is also the only city on the continent with a hot desert climate, known as BWh. This climate exists from the city outskirts to the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The region receives only about 220 mm of yearly precipitation. This averages to just 26 days of rain per year.

The city is also one of the sunniest places in Europe. It enjoys about 3,000 hours of sunshine every year. On average, there are over 320 sunny days annually.

The landscape around the city offers many scientific and cinematic wonders. The Tabernas Desert is a famous arid region. Because of its dry look, many "Spaghetti Western" films were shot there. Famous movies like Lawrence of Arabia also used this landscape.

Another major feature is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This park was formed by volcanic activity. It is a vital marine and terrestrial space in the Western Mediterranean. Geologists also discovered a massive cave near the city in 2000. This cave is filled with giant gypsum crystals. It may be the largest geode ever found. It formed 6 million years ago during the Messinian salinity crisis.

Modern Almería is defined by its intensive agriculture and tourism. You can see massive invernaderos, or plastic-covered greenhouses, across the landscape.

These structures allow for year-round vegetable production. The city is also a hub for transport. Its port specializes in passenger travel and ro-ro transport to Algeria and Morocco. Major roads like the A-7 and A-92 connect the city to the Spanish coast and Granada. These systems help support the growing economy and the large population.
