He was born in Jorasanko, Calcutta, on August 7, 1871. He came from a famous family of artists. His grandfather was Girindranath Tagore, and his uncle was the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. Abanindranath is often called "Aban Thakur" by many people. He helped start the Bengal school of art. This new way of painting changed modern Indian art forever. He wanted to show the beauty of Indian culture to the world.

To create his art, Abanindranath studied many different ways of painting. He first learned to use pastels and oil paints at the Calcutta School of Art. In the 1890s, he practiced the traditional European academic style. However, he soon found a deep interest in watercolours. He began to study old Mughal and Rajput art styles. Later, he even added Chinese and Japanese calligraphy to his work. This meant he used beautiful, flowing lines to make his paintings. He wanted to mix these Eastern traditions into one special style.

Abanindranath's journey into art began with his family and his studies. He spent nine years studying at Sanskrit College in Kolkata. He also studied English at St. Xavier's College for about a year and a half. His sister, Sunayani Devi, was also a talented painter. He worked with E. B. Havell to change how art was taught in Calcutta. Together, they helped start the Indian Society of Oriental Art in 1907. This group helped artists focus on Indian traditions instead of Western models. They looked at ancient things, like the Ajanta Caves, for inspiration.

There are many famous pieces of art made by Abanindranath.
