He was a master of the sarod, which is a stringed instrument. He was also a composer and a very important teacher. He started a special school of music called the Maihar gharana. This school changed how people played music in the 20th century. Many of his students became famous musicians themselves. His son, Ali Akbar Khan, was one of those great players. Khan's teaching helped many people master the sitar and the violin.

Learning music was a long journey for Khan. He first learned from his older brother, Fakir Aftabuddin Khan. When he was ten, he joined a folk music group called a jatra party. He heard many different kinds of songs there. Later, he studied with a musician named Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya for twelve years. After that, he learned many instruments from different teachers. He played the sitar, flute, piccolo, mandolin, and banjo. He even learned drums like the tabla and the pakhawaj.

Khan's life took him to many interesting places. He was born in a Bengali Muslim family in Shibpur village. This village was in British India. Later, he moved to the city of Kolkata to study. He also spent time in the town of Maihar. In 1907, he started the Maihar Band for orphaned children. This was an orchestral group that taught them music. In 1935, he traveled all the way to Europe. He went there with a ballet troupe led by Uday Shankar.

Khan did amazing things during his career in Maihar.
