He was famous for playing the sitar, a beautiful string instrument. His music helped people all over the world discover the sounds of India. He was not just a performer, but also a great composer. This means he wrote original music for many different things. He even wrote music for famous movies like Gandhi. Because of his great skill, he won many big prizes. Shankar's journey into music began in a very interesting way. As a young boy, he was actually a dancer. He traveled to Europe and America with his brother, Uday Shankar. During these travels, he learned French and heard Western music. At age 18, he decided to change his path. He wanted to study the sitar seriously. He spent seven years studying under a teacher named Allauddin Khan. This was part of a traditional way of learning called the gurukul system.

Learning to play the sitar was a hard job. Shankar lived with his teacher's family to study every day. He learned many musical styles and ragas. A raga is a specific pattern of melody used in Indian music. He also learned to play other instruments like the surbahar and the rudra veena. In 1939, he made his first public performance on the sitar. He played a duet, called a jugalbandi, with another musician. After finishing his studies in 1944, he began working as a music director.
