These movies were directed by Satyajit Ray. They tell the life story of a young man named Apu. We see him grow from a small boy into a man. The films are based on Bengali novels by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. Many people call these movies masterpieces. They are very important to the history of world cinema. The stories help us feel the deep emotions of the characters.

The trilogy follows Apu through three different stages of life. The first film is Pather Panchali, which means "Song of the Little Road." It shows Apu as a boy in a rural village in Bengal. The second film is Aparajito, which means "The Unvanquished." It shows Apu as a student who moves to the city of Calcutta. The final film is Apur Sansar, or "The World of Apu." This movie shows Apu as an adult trying to be a writer. He also learns how to handle the joys and sorrows of marriage.

Satyajit Ray made these films with a very small budget. He used a crew and actors who were mostly beginners.

For the first film, he spent about 150,000 rupees. This was only about $45,300 at that time. Shooting Pather Panchali took three years because money was hard to find. Ray used his own savings to keep the project going. He even refused money if people tried to change his story. He wanted to tell the truth about the characters' lives.

These movies won many huge awards around the world. The first film won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. The second film, Aparajito, won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The third film won the Sutherland Trophy in London. Ravi Shankar composed the beautiful music for the series. His music is based on Indian classical music. Many critics rank these films among the greatest ever made. They have stayed popular for many decades.

You might know other famous movie trilogies like Star Wars or Toy Story. The Apu Trilogy is also one of the highest-rated sets of films. On the website Rotten Tomatoes, the films have very high scores. They are often compared to the way a musical raga develops. This is a special kind of Indian music. The films show how people change as they grow up. They remind us how much life can change in a few years.
