Subrata Mitra was a famous Indian cinematographer. A cinematographer is the person who films movies.

He was born in Calcutta, Bengal, in 1930. He came from a family of smart people. His great-grandfather was a man named Brajendranath Dey. Mitra was also related to the singer Uma Bose. He went to Ballygunge Government High School in Kolkata. He is remembered as one of the best filmmakers in India.

Mitra began his career in a very unusual way. He was only 21 years old when he started. He had never even touched a movie camera before!

He began working with the famous filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Their first big project together was Pather Panchali in 1955. This was the start of a very long partnership. Mitra worked on many of Ray's later films too. He spent many sleepless nights thinking about how to film each scene. He wanted every shot to be perfect for the audience.

Mitra was a master of using light in movies. He wanted his films to look natural and real.

He invented a special way to use light called bounce lighting. This method used large diffusers to spread light out. It helped studio lights look just like natural sunlight. This made the scenes feel much more true to life. He was inspired by the photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. He also learned from the style of a filmmaker named Jean Renoir.

Mitra believed that a cameraman should show restraint. He did not want to just make things look glamorous. Instead, he used light to create different moods and feelings.

He felt his style was a bit like "underacting." This means he kept his work simple and steady. He worked on many important films like The Apu Trilogy. This set of films includes Aparajito and Apur Sansar. He also filmed movies like Charulata and Mahanagar. His work helped change how movies looked in India.

Because of his great skill, Mitra won many important awards. In 1986, he won a National Film Award for New Delhi Times. That same year, he received the Padma Shri. The Padma Shri is a very high honor in India.

In 1992, he won a Lifetime Achievement Award from Eastman Kodak. Later in his life, he became a professor. He taught cinematography at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. He shared his many secrets of light with new students in Kolkata.
