Subrata Mitra was a famous Indian cinematographer. A cinematographer is a person who films movies.

He was born in Calcutta. He grew up in a family of smart people.

Mitra started his job at age 21. He had never used a movie camera before. He worked with a great filmmaker named Satyajit Ray. They made many films together. One famous set of films is called The Apu Trilogy.

Mitra was a master of light. He wanted movies to look real. He used a new way called bounce lighting. This used large tools to spread light out. It helped studio light look like natural light. This made the scenes feel very true to life.

Mitra worked very hard. He often stayed awake at night to solve problems. He thought a cameraman should show restraint. This means he did not try to show off. He wanted to create moods and feelings.
