Raoul Coutard was a famous French cinematographer. A cinematographer is a person who manages the camera for a movie. He worked on over 75 films during his long career.

Before making movies, he was a war photographer. He lived in Vietnam for eleven years. Later, he began working with many famous directors. He worked often with Jean-Luc Godard. This was during a time called the French New Wave. This was a special period for French films.

Coutard found new ways to film. He often held the camera by hand. This gave movies a real, natural look. He also used new ways to use light. He once made a simple lighting rig. He hung small lights just below the ceiling. He used white cards to bounce the light. This made the whole room bright and soft. This helped directors move the camera easily.

Coutard also directed his own films. His first film was called Hoa Binh. It won awards at big film festivals. He was a very important part of movie history.
