Pather Panchali is a famous Indian drama film.

It is considered one of the greatest movies in history. The film tells the story of a young boy named Apu. He lives with his family in a rural village called Nischindipur. Apu and his sister, Durga, face many hardships due to poverty. Yet, they still find small joys in their daily lives. They enjoy watching a traveling bioscope or hearing a distant train whistle. This movie is part of a larger story called The Apu Trilogy.

Making the film was a very long and difficult task. Satyajit Ray did not have a written script at first. Instead, he used his own drawings and notes to plan scenes. This planning tool is called a storyboard.

Ray even traveled by sea to write his notes. The production took nearly three years to finish. Because there was not much money, the crew often had to stop working. Ray even had to sell his own gramophone records to pay for it. He also pawned his life insurance policy to keep the project going.

Satyajit Ray was the writer and director of this masterpiece. He first read the book by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay in 1944. Ray had worked as a graphic designer for Signet Press. He loved the book's sense of truth and beauty. The film is based on a famous Bengali novel from 1929. The title, Pather Panchali, can mean "Song of the Little Road."

Ray wanted to show the real way of life in a village. This helped start a new movement in Indian cinema called parallel cinema. This movement focused on being authentic and showing real social life.

Many people helped bring this vision to life. Ravi Shankar, a famous musician, composed the music using classical Indian ragas. Subrata Mitra worked as the cinematographer to capture the scenes.

Even though Mitra was new to film, he became a respected professional. The actors included Subir Banerjee as Apu and Kanu Banerjee as Harihar. Ray found the boy for Apu through his wife in their neighborhood. The film was shot mostly in a village called Boral. It won many big prizes, like the Best Human Document award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956.

This film changed how people see movies from India. It was one of the first Indian films to get great attention from all over the world. It premiered in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955. People in India were also very excited to see it. The West Bengal government helped by buying the film. This purchase eventually turned into a large profit for the state. Today, scholars still study the film for its beautiful and poetic style. It remains a classic that shows both the struggles and the wonders of life.
