Amir Khan was a famous Indian singer and musician. He belonged to the Hindustani classical tradition of music.

He was known for creating the Indore gharana. A gharana is a specific style or school of music. This style was very special because it blended different ideas together. It combined the grand feeling of dhrupad with the bright details of khyal. His music was a mix of deep thought and strong emotion. He wanted his singing to be both smart and beautiful.

Amir Khan had a very rich and deep voice. His voice could reach three different octaves. He used a special way of singing called merukhand. This technique uses clever patterns to move through notes. He often started his songs very slowly. This is called ati-vilambit laya. He would slowly build up the music using a method called bol-alap. Later, he would speed up the tempo. He used many different types of fast notes called taans. These notes could move in unpredictable ways.

His musical journey began in a family of performers. He was born in Kalanaur, India, in 1912. His father, Shahmir Khan, played instruments like the sarangi and veena. His grandfather, Change Khan, sang in a royal court. Amir Khan first learned to play the sarangi. Later, his father helped him focus on vocal training. He grew up surrounded by many different musical styles. Many musicians visited his home to perform. This helped him learn a great deal about music at a young age.

Amir Khan was mostly a self-taught musician. He moved to Bombay in 1934 to start his career. He recorded several 78-rpm records during this time. He also worked in Raigadh in Madhya Pradesh. He spent time living in Delhi and Calcutta as well.

He studied the tarana, which is a type of song. He found that tarana words often come from Persian and Arabic. For example, the word "Tom" can mean "I am yours." He was a very respected artist in his country. He won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1967. He also received the Padma Bhushan in 1971.

Even though he loved classical music, he also worked in films. He sang songs for movies like Baiju Bawra and Shabaab. This helped many people discover his beautiful style. He believed that music should come from the heart. He once said that music touches the soul.

Many other singers still study his work today. His style has influenced many famous musicians. His legacy lives on through his many students. He remains a very important figure in Indian culture. He passed away in 1974 in Calcutta.
