Daṇḍin was a famous writer from ancient India. He was a master of the Sanskrit language. He was also a skilled writer in Tamil. People remember him as a great poet and a grammarian. A grammarian is someone who studies the rules of language. He was known for his clever and playful use of words. One old hymn even calls him a master of playful words.

Daṇḍin wrote in many different ways. He wrote prose, which is ordinary writing used in stories. He also wrote verse, which is writing that follows a rhythm or rhyme. One of his most famous books is the Kāvyādarśa. This book is a handbook for classical poetry. It explains how to make a poem beautiful. Daṇḍin believed beauty comes from using thirty-six different rhetorical devices. These are special tools used to decorate writing.

Most experts believe Daṇḍin lived a long time ago. His career likely took place around 680 to 720 CE. He worked at the Pallava court in a place called Kāñcī. He was the great-grandson of a poet named Dāmodara. Dāmodara served kings in places like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Daṇḍin's work was highly praised by other famous writers. For example, a writer named Rajashekhara spoke well of him.

Some of Daṇḍin's stories are still studied today. One book is called Daśakumāracarita. This book tells the adventures of ten princes. It shows what life was like in Indian society during his time. He also wrote a story called Avantisundarī. This story is about a beautiful lady from a place called Avanti. Not all of his books are complete anymore. Some of his writings are only fragments of what they used to be.

Daṇḍin's ideas changed how people thought about art. His book, the Kāvyādarśa, was a very important guide. It was influenced by an earlier writer named Bhaṭṭi. Daṇḍin also responded to the ideas of a poet named Bhāmaha. By the tenth century, people studied both Daṇḍin and Bhāmaha together. Their works became the foundation for Sanskrit poetry. Even today, scholars still look at his complex sentences and long words.
