The Dashakumaracharita is a famous prose romance written in Sanskrit. It is a collection of exciting tales about ten young men called the Kumaras. These men are the sons of princes and royal ministers. They are very well-educated and study many subjects. They learn about law, grammar, and astrology. They also learn medicine, music, and warfare. The stories follow their many adventures across different lands.

The book is organized into several distinct parts. It begins with a prologue, which is an opening section. This prologue has five chapters called Ucchvāsa. The main part of the book is divided into eight chapters. There is also an epilogue, or Uttarapīthikā, at the end. Some of the original text from the beginning and end is lost. Because of this, we only have eight of the ten stories. The stories of Rajavahan and Vishruta are also incomplete.

Writing this book was a task for many people. It is attributed to a writer named Dandin. He likely lived between the seventh and eighth centuries CE. Some parts of the book were added later by other authors. These writers tried to copy the original style of the book. Because of this, there are different versions of some parts. There are even small disagreements between the different sections. For example, the stories tell different things about a man named Pramati.

One part of the book shows a very clever way of writing. In the seventh chapter, a man named Mantragupta tells his story. He has a hard job because his lips are swollen. This makes it painful for him to close his mouth. Because of this, he must avoid certain sounds. He cannot use any labial consonants, which are sounds made with the lips. In Sanskrit, these are the sounds p, ph, b, bh, and m. This special kind of writing is called lipogrammatic writing.

The adventures of the Kumaras are full of wonder and magic. Some men find hidden riches using magical eye paint. Others use tricks to save their families from danger. One man even dresses as a woman to win a princess. Mitragupta meets a Rakshasa, which is a type of being. The Rakshasa asks him four difficult questions about love and life. The Kumaras show great skill and bravery in everything they do. Their stories bring together many different ideas about the world.
