Baij learned how to create art in a special way. At age 16, a journalist named Ramananda Chatterjee noticed his talent. In 1925, Baij went to the art school at Santiniketan. He studied under the teacher Nandalal Bose. Later, he became a teacher at the school himself. He used new materials like cement and laterite mortar. This was different from the old ways of making art. He liked to make very large public sculptures. He did these projects on his own initiative.

His history is full of important moments and changes. In 1938, he finished a famous work called the Santal Family. This large sculpture showed the grace of tribal peasants. Usually, public art was only made for rulers or governments. Baij changed this by celebrating everyday people. He also made statues for the Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi. For these, he used sandstone from the Kangra valley. He made two figures named Yaksha and Yakshi.
