He was special because he mixed European styles with Indian traditions. He used Western ways of painting to show Indian gods and goddesses. This style helped people imagine the characters from ancient stories. His work became a major part of how many people think about Indian epics. Many people feel he was the first modern artist in India.

Varma used several different ways to create his beautiful art. He first learned the basics of painting in Madurai. Later, he practiced water painting with a teacher named Rama Swami Naidu. He also learned how to use oil paints from a British artist named Theodore Jenson. He often used real Indian women as models for his paintings of goddesses. This made his religious scenes feel very real and beautiful. He even painted stories from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.

Varma was born on April 29, 1848, in the state of Travancore. This area is now part of Kerala, India. He was part of an aristocratic family in Kilimanoor. His mother, Uma Ambabayi Thampurratti, was a writer and a poet. His father, Ezhumavil Neelakanthan Bhattatiripad, was a scholar of Sanskrit and Ayurveda. Varma was closely linked to the royal family of Travancore. In fact, his granddaughters were even adopted into that royal family in 1900.

He wanted his art to be more than just for rich people. In 1894, he started a lithograph printing press in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. Lithographs are prints made from stone that are much cheaper than paintings. He later moved the press to Malavli in 1899. This press was the largest and most new in India at that time. His prints of Hindu gods were very popular with common people. Varma even won three gold medals at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

Today, people still talk about the legacy of Raja Ravi Varma. Some art historians say he helped start modern Indian art. Other critics think his style was too showy or sentimental. Even with these different views, his impact is huge. The Government of Kerala gives an award named after him for excellence in art. His name is even found in space, as a crater on Mercury is named Varma. He remains a very important figure for artists in India today.
