A wrongful execution is a very serious mistake in justice. It happens when an innocent person is put to death by the law. This is often called a miscarriage of justice. Many people argue about the death penalty because of these mistakes. Some people say these errors show the whole system needs to change. Others believe the system can still work even if mistakes happen. It is a hard topic that involves many different ideas about fairness.

Sometimes, new tools help find the truth after a long time. In the United States, DNA evidence is a big help. DNA is a way to look at tiny parts of a person to find facts. Since 1992, DNA has helped free more than 20 people from death row. Since 1973, at least 190 people in the U.S. have been released from death row. Many of these people were found innocent because of lies or bad police work. However, DNA evidence is only available for a small part of these cases.

History shows many different stories of people who were wrongly punished. In Australia, a man named Colin Campbell Ross was hanged in 1922. He was accused of a crime in Melbourne. Later, experts used new tools to look at his case. He was finally given a pardon in 2008. In China, a man named Wei Qing'an was executed in 1984. Only one month later, another man admitted he did the crime. This shows how quickly a mistake can be found.

Other stories come from places like Ireland and the United Kingdom. In Ireland, Maolra Seoighe was executed in 1882. He could only speak Irish, but his trial was held in English. He was finally given a pardon in 2018. In the United Kingdom, Timothy Evans was executed in 1950. An inquiry later found his neighbor was the real killer. This case helped lead to the end of the death penalty in the UK. Another man, Mahmood Hussein Mattan, was executed in 1952. His family later received money to help them after his conviction was overturned.

These stories help us understand how much the law can change. We can see how better science and new rules help people. In the past, mistakes happened because of bad evidence or unfair trials. Today, many countries have changed their rules to prevent these things. We learn from the past to make sure things are fairer. Even though these stories are sad, they show how people work to find the truth.
