Sometimes the law makes a big mistake. This is called a wrongful execution. It happens when an innocent person is put to death. This is a very serious error in justice.

In the United States, many people have been set free. Since 1973, at least 190 people were released from death row. Many were freed because of lies or bad police work. Now, new DNA tests help find the truth. These tests can prove a person did not do a crime. Since 1992, DNA has helped free more than 20 people in the U.S.

Other countries have seen these mistakes too. In the United Kingdom, Timothy Evans was executed in 1950. Later, people found out his neighbor was the real killer. In China, many people were killed for crimes they did not do. For example, Wei Qing'an was executed in 1984. A month later, another man admitted to the crime. In Australia, Colin Campbell Ross was hanged in 1922. Years later, experts used new tools to show he was innocent.
