A polygraph is a tool used to measure body changes.

People often call it a lie detector. However, it does not actually find lies. It measures things like blood pressure and pulse. It also tracks how you breathe and how your skin conducts electricity.

Testers use these readings to look for patterns. They ask different kinds of questions. Some are simple, like asking for your name. Other questions are the ones they really want to know about. They believe that lying causes different body changes than telling the truth. But there is no specific body change that only happens when someone lies.

Many scientists say the polygraph is not a reliable tool. It can measure fear or stress instead of lies. An innocent person might feel very nervous. This can make the machine show a wrong result. Some people can even use tricks to beat the test. Because of this, many experts call it pseudoscience. This means it is not based on true science.
