Alan Turing was a smart thinker.

In 1950, he asked a big question. He wanted to know if machines can think. Since "thinking" is hard to define, he made a test.

Turing called this the Turing test. It is based on a party game. In the game, a judge asks questions. The judge talks to a human and a machine.

The judge only reads written answers. They do not see the players. The judge tries to guess which one is the machine. If the judge cannot tell them apart, the machine passes. The test is not about being right. It is about how much the machine acts like a human.

Turing thought about this at the University of Manchester. He wanted to see if a computer could play the part of a person. This idea changed how we think about artificial intelligence. Many people still study his work today. Some people disagree with his test. They argue that acting smart is not the same as being aware.
