The electric chair is a special device used for capital punishment. It works through a process called electrocution. To use it, a prisoner is strapped into a custom wooden chair. Metal parts called electrodes are then attached to the head and legs. This method was meant to be a more humane way to carry out the death penalty. It was often seen as a better choice than hanging.

How the chair works involves specific steps and science. Early on, people thought the electricity caused death by damaging the brain. However, science later proved that the death comes from cardiac arrest. This happens because the electricity causes ventricular fibrillation in the heart. The electricity travels through the body via the electrodes. This process stops the heart from working correctly.

This invention began with a dentist named Alfred P. Southwick. In 1881, he saw how electricity could kill a person instantly. He worked with a doctor named George E. Fell to test this. They conducted many experiments using hundreds of stray dogs. They tested different electrode types and placements. They even tried testing the dogs in and out of water. Southwick used a modified dental chair for his designs.

Many people helped shape the history of the chair. In 1886, Governor David B. Hill formed the Gerry Commission. This group included Southwick and a reformer named Elbridge Thomas Gerry. They studied ways to make executions more humane. Famous inventor Thomas Edison also gave his ideas to the commission. This led to the "War of the Currents." This was a big fight between direct current and alternating current.

The electric chair became a famous symbol in the United States. It was also used quite a bit in the Philippines. Over time, its use has gone down a lot. Most places now use lethal injection instead. However, some states still have the electric chair as an option. For example, Alabama and Florida allow it as a choice. Other states like Kentucky and Tennessee also have specific rules for its use.
