People do this for many reasons. They might want to punish someone. They may also want to force a confession or get information. Sometimes, it is used to scare other people. Most victims are people who are poor or marginalized. This means they belong to groups that have less power in society.

There are different ways that people carry out torture. Physical torture is very common, such as beatings.

In the twentieth century, some people began using psychological methods instead. These methods aim to hurt the mind rather than the body. This can help people deny they were doing anything wrong. The goal is often to break a person's will. It can destroy their personality and sense of self. This is one of the most damaging things a person can experience.

People have used torture since ancient times. In the past, many societies thought it was a legal way to find the truth.

There is evidence of it in Early Neolithic Europe from 7,000 years ago. It is also mentioned in the history of Assyria and Persia. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many Western countries stopped using it in their legal systems. This happened because of new ideas about the value of human life. However, it continued to be used in many other parts of the world.

History shows many specific times when torture was used. During the Algerian War from 1954 to 1962, about 300,000 people were tortured.

During the Cold War, it was used in Latin America. In those cases, between 100,000 and 150,000 victims were recorded. In China, judicial torture was banned in 1905. This included other painful punishments like flogging. Even though it is illegal now, many countries still practice it in secret.

Today, the world has rules to try and stop this. International law forbids torture for all states under any circumstances. Many global treaties also make it strictly illegal.

This opposition helped start the human rights movement after World War II. Many people work to protect vulnerable groups like refugees and migrants. These groups are often at higher risk of being hurt. Even though it is hard to stop, many organizations work for reform. They try to make sure people are treated with dignity.
