Cruelty is a serious topic about how people act. It means causing pain to someone on purpose. It can also mean seeing someone suffer and not helping them. This happens even when a simple remedy is right there. People often use the word sadism to describe this. The word itself has a long history. It comes from Middle English and Old French. Those words come from the Latin word "crudelitas."

Lawyers use the word cruelty in many different ways. They use it when talking about the treatment of animals. It is also used for children, spouses, and prisoners. In animal law, it often means causing unnecessary suffering. Criminal law uses it to talk about torture or bad punishment. Some divorce cases use it to describe mental distress. This helps decide how to handle a split between people.

An expert named Barozzo explains four ways to see cruelty. The first way is the agent-objective view. This looks at whether an act goes beyond what is fair. It sees cruelty as a mind that is too harsh. The second way is the agent-subjective view. This is when a person feels joy from causing pain. It looks at the character of the person doing the harm.

There are two more ways to understand this idea. The third is the victim-subjective view. This focuses on how much the victim suffers. It looks at their age, health, and how long it lasts. The fourth is the victim-objective view. This is about a violation of human dignity. It can happen through big social processes or institutions. Even if a person does not know it, it is still cruelty.

Many thinkers have written about cruelty throughout history. The writer George Eliot said cruelty only needs an opportunity. She felt it did not need a special reason to happen. The philosopher Bertrand Russell spoke about marriage customs. He believed some punishments for these customs were unnecessary. Gilbert K. Chesterton called cruelty the worst kind of sin. He even said intellectual cruelty was the worst of all. These ideas show that cruelty is a human problem.
