Lawyers use this word in many ways. They talk about how people treat animals. They also talk about how people treat children. In some cases, it is used in divorce laws. This is when one person causes mental or physical distress to another.

There are four main ways to think about cruelty. One way looks at the act itself. This is when a person goes beyond what is fair. Another way looks at the person causing the pain. This is when they feel joy from seeing others suffer.

A third way looks at the person feeling the pain. It focuses on how much they suffer. This depends on things like their age or health. The last way looks at human dignity. This is when a person's worth is not respected. This can happen through big groups or systems. Cruelty is a problem made by humans. Because of this, people work to stop it and fix it.
