In ancient times, torture was often legal. Many societies used it in court. They thought it could find the truth. It was used for serious crimes like treason. Some groups, like slaves, were often targeted.

In the 1700s and 1800s, things began to change. Many Western countries stopped using it officially. They started to value human life more. However, torture still happened in many places. It was used during wars and by colonial powers. In the 1900s, it was used during the Cold War.

Today, international law says torture is forbidden. It is against many global treaties. Most people in the world are against it. Still, it is practiced in many countries. Many people work hard to protect human rights.
