People enjoy them in many different ways across Asia and the world. In Cantonese, the name means "cloud swallow." This name comes from how they look when they cook. They float in hot broth just like small, white clouds.

While there are many styles, Cantonese wontons are very popular in Western countries. This is because many Cantonese restaurants are found overseas. People love them for their smooth texture and tasty fillings.

Making a wonton is a careful job.

First, you take a square wrapper made of flour, egg, water, and salt. You lay the skin flat in your palm. Then, you place a little filling in the center. Most fillings use ground pork, chicken, or shrimp mixed with spices. You can use a wet finger to help the edges stick together. It is important to press out the air inside. This helps the wonton stay whole while it cooks.

These dumplings have a very long history in China.

A writer named Yang Xiong mentioned them during the western Han dynasty. Back then, they were thought of as a type of bread. Ancient people even called them "hun dun," which means "chaos." This was because they were sealed buns with no openings. Over many centuries, they became very popular in southern China. By the Tang dynasty, people began to use different names for wontons and jiaozi dumplings.

There are many unique ways to prepare them.

In Ningbo, they are often filled with pork and shrimp. Some wontons are shaped like a gold ingot called a yuanbao. Others are small and unevenly squashed, called "little wontons."

Today, you can find wontons in many different cultures.
