It had both Malay and Chinese residents. There was already a Chinatown there. Wang wrote about his travels in a book. The book is called Dao Yi Zhi Lue. This title means A Brief Account of Island Barbarians. It was written in 1349. This book is a very important record. It helps us know about early Singapore history.

He called some areas Liuqiu. This land was very rich and fertile. It was warmer than the Penghu islands. The people there used rafts instead of boats. They made salt by boiling sea water. They also made liquor from sugarcane juice. They traded items like gold, pearls, and beads.

Wang saw another area called Pisheye to the east. This place had mountains and wide plains. The weather there was even hotter than Liuqiu. The people in Pisheye had different customs. They wore red silk and yellow cloth on their heads. They also used black juice to make tattoos.

These people lived in wild mountains and valleys. They did not have a single chief. They often traveled by boat to raid others. Some people were even taken as slaves.

Historians study Wang's notes to learn about the past. A historian named Efren B. Isorena studied these accounts. He looked at wind currents in the Pacific. He thinks Pisheye might be the Visayas islands. These islands are in the Philippines. He believes the people were closely related. They may have traveled using the north wind. They would return south using the summer monsoon. These connections show how people moved long ago.
