He helped people understand the ancient past. His work proved that the Shang dynasty really existed. Before his discoveries, many people debated if it was real. He used modern ways to study the earth. This helped change how scientists look for history. He wanted to find the true roots of Chinese culture.

Li Ji used a special way to dig in the ground. He focused on the different layers of soil. These layers are called strata. He looked at how these layers piled up over time. In 1931, he found three different cultural layers at Yinxu. These layers were named Xiaotun, Longshan, and Yangshao. They showed how Chinese culture changed and grew. This method made his work very scientific.

Li Ji had a long journey of learning. He was born in 1896 in Zhongxiang, Hubei. He studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing first. Then, he moved to the United States in 1918. He studied at Clark University in Massachusetts. Later, he went to Harvard University for more study. He earned his PhD there in 1923. He also wrote a book about Chinese people in 1928.

Between 1928 and 1937, Li Ji led big digs at Yinxu.

Li Ji's work helped many other people learn. He taught at Nankai University and Tsinghua University. After a war, he moved to Taipei, Taiwan. He led departments at National Taiwan University. He mentored many new archaeologists like Xia Nai. He also taught Kwang-chih Chang and Guo Baojun. He died on August 1, 1979. His ideas still help us study the past today.
