Archaeologists found the site in 1953. A man named Shi Xingbang was the one who discovered it. Today, people visit the Xi'an Banpo Museum to see what was found. This museum was built in 1957 to keep the old items safe.

The people at Banpo lived in a very organized way. Their village covered about 5 to 6 hectares of land. A wide ditch went all the way around the village. This ditch was 5 to 6 meters wide and acted like a moat.

Most houses were built into the ground. The floors were about 1 meter below the surface. These homes had wooden poles and steep roofs made of thatch. People lived in these circular houses with their families. Some experts think between 100 and 500 people lived there.

Farming was a huge part of life at Banpo. The people grew a grain called foxtail millet. They also found seeds from hazelnuts and chestnuts.
