Visa Inc. is a major American multinational corporation. It provides payment card services to people and businesses.

The company facilitates electronic funds transfers across the entire world. Most people interact with the company through Visa-branded credit, debit, or prepaid cards. It is important to understand that Visa does not actually issue these cards. It does not lend money to consumers or set their interest rates. Instead, Visa provides specialized payment products to various financial institutions. These banks then use those products to offer credit and cash access to their customers.

All these global transactions are powered by a massive computer network called VisaNet. This network processes nearly every transaction through four highly secure data centers. These facilities are located in Ashburn, Virginia, and Highlands Ranch, Colorado, in the United States. They are also located in London, England, and Singapore. These centers are built to be incredibly resilient against natural disasters, crime, and terrorism. They are capable of operating independently from external utilities if necessary. The speed of these centers is remarkable. They can handle 30,000 simultaneous transactions. They can also perform up to 100 billion computations every single second.

The history of the company began in 1958 with the BankAmericard program.

This program was created by Bank of America in Fresno, California. Joseph P. Williams led the development team for this new project. Before this, people often carried many different cards for different stores. This was inefficient and inconvenient for the average consumer. Williams wanted to create a single, all-purpose credit card. To launch the program, the bank mailed 65,000 unsolicited cards to residents in Fresno. This was a massive experiment in mass mailing.

The early years were quite difficult for the BankAmericard program. The project faced significant issues with credit card fraud and unpaid bills. Many customers were unhappy because they were held liable for fraudulent charges. Because of these problems, Bank of America lost approximately $20 million during the launch phase. However, the bank worked hard to fix these issues. They implemented better financial controls and apologized to households. By May 1961, the program finally became profitable. The bank kept this success secret for several years to avoid competition.

In 1966, Bank of America began licensing the program to other banks. This change happened because a new competitor called Master Charge appeared. Master Charge was an alliance of regional bankcard associations. Because of federal restrictions, Bank of America could not expand into other states directly. Licensing allowed the system to grow across the United States. During the late 1960s, the program also expanded to other countries. In Canada, it was known as Chargex. In France, it was called Carte Bleue. In the United Kingdom, it was issued through Barclaycard.

As the system grew, it became difficult for one bank to manage. A man named Dee Hock helped organize the various banks into a cooperative. In 1970, Bank of America gave up direct control of the program. A new independent corporation called National BankAmericard Inc. was formed to manage it. This turned the system into a joint alliance of banks. In 1976, the directors decided to unite all international networks under one name. They chose the name "Visa."

Dee Hock believed the name was easy to recognize in many languages. He wanted the name to represent universal acceptance across the globe.

Today, Visa is a massive force in the global economy. It is currently the second-largest card payment organization in the world. It was surpassed by China UnionPay in 2015 based on transaction value and number of cards. However, UnionPay's size is mostly due to the large domestic market in China. Visa remains the dominant company in the rest of the world. It currently commands a 50% market share of total card payments. In 2025, the VisaNet network processed 257.5 billion transactions. These transactions were worth a staggering US$14.2 trillion. The brand is so large that it even appears in global sports sponsorships.
