\n\nThe company's original mechanism involved transmitting and delivering telegram messages. This was done through a vast network of physical wires. In 1866, the company launched a stock ticker to provide rapid market data. In 1871, it introduced wire money transfer services. Later, the company moved into the space age. In 1974, it became the first American telecommunications firm to operate its own geosynchronous communications satellites. These satellites, known as the Westar fleet, carried telegram and mailgram data. They also relayed video, voice, and facsimile transmissions for other companies.

\n\nWestern Union's history is defined by rapid expansion and several distinct eras. It began as a regional firm in the mid-1800s. By 1864, it had become a national oligopolist. This means it was one of a few large companies that controlled the entire market. In 1866, it acquired its two main competitors, the American Telegraph Company and the United States Telegraph Company. This gave the firm a virtual monopoly. By 1945, it acquired its final major rival, Postal Telegraph, Inc. However, the rise of the telephone eventually changed the industry. This led to a long period of decline for telegraphy.

\n\nThe company was founded in 1851 in Rochester, New York. Its original name was the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. Founders included Samuel L. Selden and Hiram Sibley. In 1856, the firm merged with the Erie and Michigan Telegraph Company. Following this merger, it became the Western Union Telegraph Company. A major milestone occurred in 1861. The company completed the first transcontinental telegraph. This massive project connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The very first messages sent over this line went to President Abraham Lincoln.

\n\nThe scale of Western Union's influence was immense. By 1900, the company operated one million miles of telegraph lines. It also managed two international undersea cables. In the 1960s, the company introduced telex services. These were teleprinter services used for business communication. In 1959, they even introduced the \"Candygram,\" which was a box of chocolates sent with a telegram. Despite these innovations, the company faced massive financial shifts. In 1984, it began negotiating to restructure its mounting debts. By 1991, the company changed its name to New Valley Corporation to protect the Western Union brand during bankruptcy proceedings.

\n\nWestern Union eventually underwent a complete strategic transformation. Under the leadership of Robert J. Amman, the company changed its core focus. It shifted from being an asset-based communications provider to a consumer-based money transfer business. This involved selling off non-strategic assets. For example, in 1990, it sold several business services to AT&T for $180 million. The company officially ceased all communications operations in 2006. This marked the end of its era as a telegraph and telecommunications carrier.

Many immigrants use the service to wire money back to their home countries. The company continues to grow through acquisitions. In 2009, it bought the Canada-based Custom House for $371 million. In 2011, it acquired Angelo Costa, which has 7,500 points of sale in Europe. This allows the company to maintain a massive global presence.
