It is a service that makes electronic funds transfers possible. You might use a Visa credit, debit, or prepaid card to pay for things. However, Visa does not actually give cards to people. It also does not lend money or set the fees you pay. Instead, Visa provides special products to banks and other financial institutions. These banks then use the products to offer money access to their own customers.

Everything works through a giant computer network called VisaNet. This network handles almost all Visa transactions across the globe. Most of these happen at four very secure data centers. These centers are in Ashburn, Virginia, and Highlands Ranch, Colorado. They are also in London, England, and Singapore. These buildings are built to stay safe from crime and natural disasters. They can even work on their own if the local power goes out. These centers are incredibly fast and powerful. They can handle 30,000 transactions at once. They can also do 100 billion computations every single second.

The story of Visa began many years ago in California. In 1958, Bank of America launched a program called BankAmericard.

A man named Joseph P. Williams led the team that created it. They started by mailing 65,000 cards to people in Fresno. This was the first big attempt to use a single card for many things. It was a hard job at first. The program faced many problems with fraud and unpaid bills. The bank even lost about $20 million during this early time. But the bank worked hard to fix these mistakes. By May 1961, the program finally started making money.

As time went on, the system grew into a global alliance. In 1966, Bank of America began letting other banks use the program. This happened because a new competitor called Master Charge appeared. In 1970, Bank of America gave up direct control of the system. A group of banks formed a cooperative to manage it together. In 1976, they decided to change the name to Visa.

A man named Dee Hock chose this new name. He wanted a word that people in many different countries could say easily. He wanted the name to show that the card was accepted everywhere.

Today, Visa is one of the largest payment companies in the world. It is the second-largest after China UnionPay. In 2025, the VisaNet network processed 257.5 billion transactions. These transactions were worth US$14.2 trillion. Even though UnionPay is larger, Visa is still the leader in most of the world. It holds a 50% market share of total card payments globally. You can see how important the brand is in many places. For example, the name is even used by racing teams.
