It helps move money during many types of purchases. Its main job is to process payments between different banks. This happens when a person uses a debit, credit, or prepaid card. The company connects the bank of the store to the bank of the buyer. This way, the money moves safely from one place to another. It is a vital part of how modern shopping works around the world.

This system works through a specific way of handling data. When you buy something, the payment network starts a series of steps. It sends information from the merchant's bank to the buyer's bank. This allows the banks to talk to each other instantly.

It began as an alliance of many different banks. In 1966, an executive named Karl H. Hinke organized a meeting in Buffalo, New York. He asked several bank leaders to meet and join forces. They formed a group called Interbankard, Inc., which later became the Interbank Card Association. By the end of 1967, this group had 150 members. The name was later changed to Master Charge, and eventually to MasterCard in 1979.

Since its start, the company has grown with many new ideas.

In 1983, it was the first bank to use holograms for security. In 2006, the company had its initial public offering. This means it began selling shares of the company to the public. By April 2024, the company had a market capitalization of $434 billion. It has also bought many other companies to help with things like artificial intelligence. These tools help keep digital payments safe and fast.

Today, Mastercard is part of your everyday life. You might see its red and yellow circles on a card.

It even uses new tech like biometric cards. These cards have a fingerprint sensor built right into the chip. This helps prove that the person using the card is the real owner. The company also helps people track their carbon footprints. This helps customers see how they contribute to global warming. It is a huge part of the global economy.
