A credit card is a special tool used to pay for things.

Most of these cards are given to people by a bank. They allow a person to buy goods or services right away. Instead of using cash, the person uses credit to pay. This creates a debt that must be paid back later. Some cards are called charge cards. These require the person to pay the full amount every month. Regular credit cards allow a person to carry a balance. This means they can pay a little bit at a time. However, they must pay interest on the money they owe.

How these cards work has changed over many years. In the past, people used metal coins or plates.

A person would press the metal onto a paper slip. This made an imprint to show who was buying. Later, airlines used a special card for travelers.

In 1934, the Air Travel Card helped people buy tickets. Travelers could buy now and pay for the flight later. By 1941, about half of airline money came from this system. This was a very helpful way to make travel easier.

History shows how many different people helped build this system. In 1950, Ralph Schneider and Frank McNamara started Diners Club. They made the first card that worked at many different stores. This was called a "general purpose" card. Later, American Express created a huge network for charge cards. In 1958, Bank of America started a new kind of program. They launched the BankAmericard in Fresno, California. They sent cards to 60,000 people all at once. This helped convince many stores to start accepting the cards.

Today, the world uses many different types of cards. In 1976, many BankAmericard users joined together to form Visa.

Another group of banks created Master Charge in 1966. This later became what we know as MasterCard. In the United Kingdom, Barclaycard launched the first card outside the U.S. in 1966. There are billions of credit cards in use around the world. In 2020, there were 1.09 billion cards in the United States alone. About 72.5% of American adults had at least one card. This shows how important these tools have become to people.

Credit cards are very different from debit cards. A debit card works more like using actual cash. A credit card relies on a third party to pay. This third party pays the seller first. Then, the person who used the card pays the third party back. Some people even collect old cards as a hobby. They look for metal tokens or old paper cards. Modern cards often have a small chip for safety.

This chip helps prevent fraud when people shop. Even though they are very common, different countries use them in different ways. Some places still prefer to use cash for most things.
