A credit card is a card from a bank.

It lets you buy things or get cash. You pay the money back later. This creates a debt that you must repay.

Long ago, cards looked very different. Some were small metal coins.

People kept them on key rings. These coins were for one store or hotel. In 1928, a metal plate called a Charga-Plate was made. It was used to record sales.

Later, new cards were made for travel. In 1934, airlines used the Air Travel Card. This let travelers pay for tickets later. In 1950, the Diners Club made a card for many stores. This was a general purpose card.

Banks soon began to make cards too. In 1958, Bank of America started a modern program. This helped many stores accept one card. This led to big names like Visa and MasterCard.
