It is based in Malvern, Pennsylvania. As of 2025, it manages about $12 trillion in assets around the world. Vanguard is the largest provider of mutual funds on Earth. It is also the second-largest provider of exchange-traded funds, or ETFs. An ETF is a type of fund that trades like a single stock. Vanguard is unique because its own customers own the company. This means the people using the funds are actually the owners.

The way Vanguard works involves many different financial tools. They offer mutual funds and ETFs to help people grow money. They also provide brokerage services and financial planning. Some of their funds have two different classes of shares. These are called investor shares and admiral shares. Admiral shares have lower expense ratios, which are the costs to run the fund. However, these shares require a higher minimum investment. This can be anywhere from $3,000 to $100,000 per fund.

John C. Bogle started Vanguard on May 1, 1975. He was a student at Princeton University in 1951. During his studies, he found that most mutual funds did not earn much money. This was because high management fees reduced the returns for investors. Bogle was even fired from his job in 1974. He said this mistake helped him learn a lot. He named the new company Vanguard after a famous ship. It was the HMS Vanguard, a flagship from a great naval battle.

In the beginning, Vanguard was a very small team. It had only three employees, including Bogle himself. His first big project was the First Index Investment Trust. This was an index fund tied to the S&P 500. It only raised $11 million at first. This was much lower than the $150 million they expected. Many people told Bogle to cancel the fund. He refused to give up on his idea.

Today, Vanguard is a global company with many offices. They have locations in Texas, Arizona, and North Carolina. They also have offices in Canada, Australia, Asia, and Europe. In 2021, they started a program for fractional shares. This lets people invest in ETFs with as little as $1. This makes investing easier for people with less money. Vanguard also works toward helping companies reach net-zero emissions by 2060.
