The company also has a division called BlackRock Solutions. This part of the firm provides services to manage financial risk. Another big part of the business is the iShares group. These are called exchange-traded funds, which are groups of investments.

Many people helped start this company in 1988. Larry Fink, Robert S. Kapito, Susan Wagner, and others were the founders. They wanted to help clients manage risk. Risk is the chance that something might go wrong with money. Fink and his team had worked together at First Boston before this. They wanted to create excellent ways to manage money and risk. At first, the firm was called Blackstone Financial Management. Later, it took the name BlackRock.

BlackRock has grown by buying other companies over many years. In 2004, it bought SSRM Holdings from MetLife for $375 million. In 2010, it bought the iShares business from Barclays for $13.5 billion. The company became a public company on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999. During that year, its shares sold for $14 each. In 2024, BlackRock agreed to buy Global Infrastructure Partners for $12.5 billion. This deal included $3 billion in cash and some company shares.

People have many different opinions about how BlackRock works. The firm focuses on ESG, which means environmental, social, and governance rules. These rules look at how companies treat the planet and people. Some states, like West Virginia, Florida, and Louisiana, do not work with them. These states disagree with the firm's ESG policies. Other people criticize BlackRock for investing in fossil fuels or the arms industry. It is a very important company in the global economy.
