John C. Bogle started the company in 1975. He was based in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Bogle wanted to help people invest with low costs. He created the first index fund for regular people. An index fund is a way to invest in many stocks at once. This can be cheaper than other ways to invest.

Vanguard is unique because its customers own it. The people who use the funds are the owners. The company manages about $12 trillion in assets. It is the largest provider of mutual funds in the world. It is also the second-largest provider of ETFs. An ETF is a type of fund that trades like a single stock.

Vanguard has offices in many places. These include Texas, Arizona, and Canada. They also have offices in Australia and Europe. Some funds have different parts called shares. Admiral shares have lower fees. But they need a higher amount of money to start. You might need $3,000 or even $100,000 to buy them.
