This specific merger brought Jamie Dimon into the firm. Dimon eventually became the CEO in 2005 and the chairman in 2006.

One of the oldest branches of the company dates back to 1799. Aaron Burr founded the Bank of the Manhattan Company on September 1, 1799. Burr famously included a clause in a water company charter. This clause allowed the company to invest surplus capital in lawful enterprises. Within six months, the company opened a bank before laying any water pipes. This institution eventually became part of Chase Manhattan Bank. Chase Manhattan was formed in 1955 when the Manhattan Company purchased Chase National Bank.

Another major lineage began with the founding of J.P. Morgan & Co. in 1871. The financier J.P. Morgan established the House of Morgan on 23 Wall Street. This firm served as a national provider of commercial and investment banking. In 1895, the company supplied the United States government with $62 million in gold. This helped restore a treasury surplus of $100 million. The firm also played a role in financing the United States Steel Corporation. This was the world's first billion-dollar corporation.

The bank has reached massive scale through many different stages of growth. It is currently the fifth-largest bank in the world by total assets. In 2025, the firm held the number one spot in the Forbes Global 2000 ranking. This was its third consecutive year at the top of that list. The company also occupies the 11th spot on the Fortune 500 list. These rankings reflect its massive revenue and global reach. Its large scale has led to enhanced regulatory oversight and a "Fortress Balance Sheet."

JPMorgan Chase's influence connects to many different global systems. The firm operates a massive investment bank by revenue. It also maintains a significant geographic footprint across the globe. Its predecessors established offices in Japan, Australia, and China as early as the 1920s. The bank has also operated in Saudi Arabia, India, and Russia. This global presence allows it to participate in international markets and government financing. However, its large scale also brings routine criticism. Critics often focus on its risk management and large-scale legal settlements.
