Vinegar is made through a two-step way called fermentation. First, yeast turns simple sugars into alcohol. Next, tiny living things called acetic acid bacteria turn that alcohol into acid. This acid gives vinegar its sharp taste. Some people make it slowly over many months. This can create a cloudy slime called the mother of vinegar. Others use fast ways to make it in just a few days.

There are many kinds of vinegar from all over the world.
