It sits in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in the southeast. The gorge is about 25 km long. It can reach depths of 700 metres. The Verdon River flows through this deep ravine. The water has a bright turquoise-green color. This color comes from minerals in the water.

The canyon is very narrow at the bottom. At the top, the walls can be 1500 metres apart. Some people compare it to the Grand Canyon in the United States.

Nature worked for a very long time to build this place.

Long ago, the area was covered by a warm, shallow sea. This sea helped corals grow on the ocean floor. Later, the land was raised up by geological activity. This movement caused the limestone to crack and break. During the Quaternary period, large glaciers moved across the land. These rivers of ice helped shape the ground. Finally, the Verdon River carved the limestone to make the gorge. The river once moved huge amounts of water every second.

People have explored this canyon for many years.

Descriptions of the gorge were printed in 1782 and 1804. It became famous in French tourist guides during the late 1800s. The gorge was not well known outside France until 1906. An explorer named Édouard-Alfred Martel visited in 1905. He led a team on a big expedition in August 1905. They were the first to reach the Pas de Galetas. Another person named Robert de Joly crossed the whole gorge in 1928.

Many interesting things happen in the gorge today.

At the end, the river flows into Lake Sainte-Croix. This lake was made by building a large dam. To make the reservoir, the village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon was destroyed in 1973. A new village was built higher up the valley. It is now the youngest village in France. The gorge also marks a border between two areas. These are the Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments. In one spot called the Imbut, the river even goes underground.

Visitors love to enjoy the many outdoor activities here.

Many people come to go rock climbing on the limestone walls. There are 1,500 different climbing routes available. Some of these routes are over 400 metres long. You can also hike on paths like the Sentier de Martel. Other people like to rent kayaks to paddle the river. Some visitors enjoy paragliding or rafting in the area. It is a very popular place to visit during the summer.
