Up from Slavery is a famous book by Booker T. Washington. It tells the story of his life from 1856 to 1915. Washington was born into slavery before the Civil War. Washington's journey involved many difficult steps. As a boy, he worked in dark mines in the city of Malden. He also worked very hard to earn money for school. He eventually went to the Hampton Institute to study. Later, he went to Alabama to start a new school. He had to find a place to teach first. He used a small, rundown shack and a church to begin. He even worked to build things like bricks to help his school grow.

This book has a very interesting history. It was first printed in pieces in a newspaper called The Outlook. This happened between November 3, 1900, and February 23, 1901. Printing it this way let Washington hear what readers thought. He could then change his writing to help his readers understand. The book became a huge success and a best-seller. It was the most popular book by an African American author until the book by Malcolm X was published.

Washington focused on a special kind of teaching at the Tuskegee Institute. He believed students needed more than just "book learning." He wanted them to learn trades and how to farm. This helped them learn useful skills for their homes. He started the school on July 4, 1881, with only 30 students. Some of his important helpers were George W. Campbell and Lewis Adams. He also worked with Olivia A. Davidson, a brave teacher who later became his wife.

Many people find this book important today because of its big ideas. It talks about themes like hard work and being a good person. It also looks at how people can change their lives through education. In 1998, a group called the Modern Library named it one of the 100 best nonfiction books of the 20th century. It is a story about how education can help people find dignity. Even though some people disagreed with his views, his life story remains a powerful example of progress.
