Invisible Man is a famous novel written by Ralph Ellison.

It is his first book and the only one published while he was alive. The story follows an unnamed Black man who feels invisible to the world. He lives in a basement room filled with hundreds of bright lights. He uses these lights to help him see and think. The book is important because it looks at how people find their own identity. It also explores the social issues faced by African Americans in the early 20th century.

The story moves through many different parts of the man's life. It starts in a small town in the South. After finishing high school, the man wins a scholarship to an all-Black college. Later, he moves to the busy streets of New York City. He finds work at a factory that makes pure white paint. He also joins a group called the Brotherhood that works in Harlem. Along the way, he meets many different people who shape his journey.

Ralph Ellison worked on this book for five years. He started writing it in a barn in Vermont during the summer of 1945. At that time, he was on sick leave from the Merchant Marine. A small part of the book was first printed in a magazine called Horizon in 1947. The full novel was finally published in 1952. Ellison said he liked to use an experimental attitude in his writing. This helped him create a story that was different from other books of that time.

The book earned many great honors over the years. In 1953, it won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. This made Ellison the first African-American writer to win that prize. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked it as the 19th best English novel of the 20th century. Time magazine also put it on a list of the 100 best English novels from 1923 to 2005. These awards show how much people value his work.

Many other writers and thinkers have been influenced by this book. For example, Barack Obama used it as a model for his own memoir. Ellison also drew ideas from other famous authors. He studied the sentence structures of Ernest Hemingway. He also looked at the work of William Faulkner and T.S. Eliot. Even the famous book Moby-Dick helped shape how he wrote about race. By mixing these different styles, Ellison created a unique piece of American literature.
