Herzog is a famous novel written by Saul Bellow in 1964. It tells the story of a man named Moses E. Herzog. He is a professor who teaches cultural history. At age 47, Herzog is facing a very difficult time in his life. He is dealing with a midlife crisis and feeling burnt out. His second wife has left him for a close friend named Valentine Gersbach. This loss makes him feel a lot of sadness and disappointment.

A unique part of this book is how it is written. It is partly made of letters that the main character writes. However, he never actually sends these letters to anyone. He writes them in his mind to friends, family, and even famous people from history. Sometimes he uses them to share deep ideas. Other times, he uses them to apologize or express his hurt. These letters help show his intense and often funny thoughts.

The story moves between several different places in the United States. It begins in a fictional town called Ludeyville in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Herzog then travels to Martha's Vineyard and to New York City. He also spends time in Chicago, where he once lived. During his travels, he visits places like the Museum of Science and an aquarium in Jackson Park. These trips show him trying to find his way again.

Saul Bellow included many real details from his own life in the book. Both Bellow and Herzog grew up in Canada as the sons of bootleggers. They were both Jewish and lived in Chicago for a long time. Bellow even based some characters on real people he knew. For example, the character Valentine is based on a friend named Jack Ludwig. The character Ramona is based on a professor named Rosette C. Lamont.

This novel is considered a very important piece of literature. It won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and the Prix International. In 2005, Time magazine named it one of the 100 best novels in English. The book shows how a person can move from living in their own head to living in the real world. As Herzog heals, he writes fewer letters and starts to look at his life differently. He learns that his life, much like an old house, can be repaired.
