He wrote about his life in this book. He was born a slave. He worked very hard to get an education. He even worked in dark mines as a boy. He worked to go to the Hampton Institute. This was a school for Black and Native American students.

Washington wanted to help others learn too. He started a school in Tuskegee, Alabama. At first, the school was just a small church and a shack. He and his partners wanted more than just book learning. They taught students how to farm and do trades. This helped them earn a living and be good people.

He worked with many people to build the school. One partner was Olivia A. Davidson. She was a brave teacher who later became his wife. The book was a big hit. It was first printed in a newspaper called The Outlook.
