He lived during a time of great change for Black Americans. Washington believed that education and business were the keys to success. He wanted people to build strength through hard work and learning. This helped the community grow with pride and economic power. His influence was so large that people called his era the Age of Booker T. Washington.

He helped start the National Negro Business League to support Black businesses. He also built a large network of supporters to raise money. This network was sometimes called the "Tuskegee Machine." He used this system to help schools and leaders. This work helped many people find better jobs and lives.

His journey began in a very difficult place. Washington was born into slavery in Virginia on April 5, 1856.

He did not know his exact birth date at first. His family gained freedom during the Civil War in 1865. After that, he moved to West Virginia to join his family. He taught himself how to read and write. He worked very hard to attend the Hampton Institute. He even worked as a janitor to pay for his studies.

In 1881, Washington became the first leader of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

The school started in a single church room. Under his leadership, the campus grew very large. Students helped build the school by making bricks and classrooms. They also raised animals and grew crops to learn. By the time he died, the school had over 100 buildings. It also had about 1,500 students and 200 faculty members.

Washington met many powerful people during his life. In 1901, he dined with President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House.

He also worked closely with the famous scientist George Washington Carver. Some leaders, like W. E. B. Du Bois, disagreed with his methods. They wanted to fight for political changes more directly. Even with these disagreements, Washington remains a major figure in history. He died in Tuskegee, Alabama, on November 14, 1915.
