Tunic

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A tunic is a simple garment made for the torso. It usually reaches from the shoulders down to the ankles or hips. Most tunics do not have fastenings like buttons or zippers. They might have short sleeves or full-length sleeves. People use them as shirts or as long gowns. This clothing is important because it has been used by many different cultures for a very long time.

How a tunic looks can tell you a lot about a person. In ancient Rome, the length and color showed a person's rank. For example, Roman senators wore the laticlavus, which had broad purple stripes. Members of the equestrian class wore the angusticlavia with narrower stripes. Soldiers and manual workers often wore shorter tunics that ended just above the knee. People who worked in offices wore longer ones that reached the ankle.

The history of the tunic goes back many centuries. The name comes from the Latin word tunica, used in ancient Rome. This style was based on earlier Greek garments. In ancient Greece, people decorated the hemline to show their city-state. Some Greeks wore a sisúra, which was a tunic with sleeves made of skins. Later, the Celts and Germanic peoples in Northern Europe wore long-sleeved tunics for warmth.

Different parts of the world have their own special versions. In the Indian subcontinent, a tunic is called a kurta. These often have beautiful embroidery or bead-work using many colors. In Vietnam, the áo dài is a traditional tunic worn over trousers. In the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Romans wore tunics made of wool or linen. Wealthy people sometimes wore fancy tunics made of silk.

We still see the influence of the tunic in our world today. During the Crimean War in the 1850s, a longer jacket was made for British soldiers. This jacket was named a tunic after the ancient Roman style. Today, many religious leaders wear a long tunic as part of their clothing. Some people also wear light tunics for sports or exercise. It is a very old idea that stays useful in many new ways.
