People have worn these garments for thousands of years. They can be worn as a coat or an overdress. Most kaftans have long sleeves and reach down to the ankles. In warm places, people wear them as light and loose clothing. They are made from many different materials like silk, cotton, or wool.

Some versions even use cashmere to stay soft.

Making a kaftan involves many special skills. Artists use many types of fabric to create them. They use velvet, silk, and even heavy brocade called çatma. Some fabrics use a mix of silk and cotton called bürümcük. Makers often add bright colors like indigo, violet, or yellow. They decorate the robes with gold or silver threads. These decorations can include ribbons, buttons, and beautiful patterns.

The patterns and colors often show how important a person is.

The history of the kaftan is very long and spans many lands. Some people believe it first appeared in ancient Mesopotamia. The name might come from the Persian word ḵaftān. It was very popular during the time of the Abbasid era. During this time, the style spread from Baghdad to China. Even the Byzantine Emperor Theophilus wore kaftans and turbans in the 830s.

Different groups used the kaftan in unique ways. In the Ottoman Empire, sultans wore very fancy robes. The Topkapı Palace kept many of these special garments. For example, they have 77 kaftans from Suleiman the Magnificent. In Algeria, the kaftan became a centerpiece for wedding clothes. The wedding style from Tlemcen is so important it is on a UNESCO list.
