Many cultures use the kaftan. In the past, the Ottoman Empire used them for special gifts. They gave fancy robes to important guests at the Topkapı Palace. The colors and patterns showed a person's rank. Some robes used gold or silver thread. This made them look very rich. In Algeria, women wear beautiful kaftans for weddings. The wedding style from Tlemcen is very special. It is even on a UNESCO list of world heritage.

History shows the kaftan traveled far. It was popular in the Middle East and North Africa. It was also worn in parts of Asia. Some people believe it first appeared in ancient Mesopotamia. The word itself may come from Persian or Turkic languages. Whether as a coat or a dress, it is a famous way to dress.
