The word comes from an old French word. It means a head covering. People have worn caps for a very long time. Some caps date back to 3200 BC.

Caps help in many ways. Many have a visor to block the sun. This keeps eyes cool and shaded. Other caps keep your head warm.

Sports use many kinds of caps. Baseball was the first sport to use them. In 1849, a team wore caps made of straw. Later, they used fine merino wool. These wool caps had a crown and a visor. This design is still very popular today.

Caps are also part of fashion. In the 1980s, companies sold sports hats to everyone. You might see snapback caps or trucker hats in movies. Even Princess Diana wore them.

Some caps have special meanings. A Phrygian cap stands for freedom.
