Tonglen is a Buddhist practice. It helps people grow kindness. The name comes from two words. Tong means giving. Len means taking. Some people call it exchanging yourself with others.

In this practice, you use your breath. You breathe in the suffering of others. Then you breathe out peace and healing. This helps you care for all living beings. It can help reduce selfish thoughts. It also helps people feel more love.

Different teachers give different steps. Patrul Rinpoche said to breathe out first. He said to send out happiness. Then you breathe in the hard feelings. Pema Chödrön says you can breathe in first. Beginners might start with small things. You can practice finding peace in daily chores. You could also work on harmony in your family. This makes it easier to help others later. Taking in suffering does not mean you must carry all the world's pain. It means you see and accept it. This can help you find your own peace of mind.

This practice is part of a way of training the mind. This is called Lojong. It has a long history in Tibet.
