Karuna is a word that means compassion. It can also mean mercy. Many people in India use this word. It is a big idea in many religions.

In Hinduism, karuna is a very important virtue. People try to grow this kindness in their hearts. The word comes from a Sanskrit root that means "to do." This means karuna is about taking action to help. Some Hindu gods are shown as being very kind. For example, the god Shiva is called a person of compassion.

In Buddhism, karuna is also a key idea. It is the wish for all living things to be free from suffering. In one group called Theravada, it is a way to find peace. In another group called Mahayana, it is needed to become a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is a person on a special path to help others.

Jainism also uses this idea. It is one of four ways to think about friendship. This helps people live a good life. Many people think karuna helps us care for the whole world.
